Grid Systems book by Elam, Kimberly

Although grid systems are the foundation for almost all typographic design, they are often associated with rigid, formulaic solutions. However, the belief that all great design is nonetheless based on grid systems (even if only subverted ones) suggests that few designers truly understand the complexities and potential riches of grid composition. We have a wide range of grid paper templates such as multi weight grid, dots, crosses, light verticals, octagonal, hexagonal, variable triangle, polar graph, circular grid, spider graph, trapezoid iso-dots, tumbling block, circular hex pattern and many more other grid paper templates. Typographic organization has always been a complex system in that there are so many elements at play, such as hierarchy, order of reading, legibility, and contrast. In Typographic Systems, Kim Elam, author of our bestselling books, Geometry of Design and Grid Systems, explores eight major structural systems beyond the traditional ordering.

Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The content of the book is great. However, if you are considering buying the kindle version of the book - simply forget it. The kindle version of the book appears to be a blunt scan of the analog book. You cannot bookmark pages, there is no table of grid system 2004 kimberly elam pdf free download. The text appears JPEG-broken after scans were coded for optimal size of files.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase. The organization of the book seems a bit disjointed to me. I would have also liked to have seen a lot of the examples use actual type rather than block diagrams. The overlays are helpful, more discussion about them would make them even more useful. I want to like the book, but am not quite there. If I had to describe the book in one word it would be sterile. One person found this helpful. Very cool book. Printed with semi-transparent overlay pages.

Super informative. If you want to be a designer, get grid system 2004 kimberly elam pdf free download. Professor recommended this book as supplementary reading for the course.

Turned out to be a great reference and really helped me understand the complexity in some grids, especially with the opaque pages with grid overlay. Required school book so it is as expected. Delivered as expect too Good Stuff! This was required reading in my layout class and it's really nice to have examples, visuals, and exercises to strengthen your layout skills. Great resource that I still go to at times for inspiration. See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews.

Translate all reviews to English. Perhaps my expectations for this book were a little too high but I felt that the use of other examples would helped to better illustrate the principles.

That said, the layout, tracing paper inserts and typography all meant that this was a great book to leaf through as well as read. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Found this book a little hard to read as I felt it was a bit awkwardly written.

It's full of useful visual examples though and covers some good fundamentals of grids. Worth ready if you're new to design. It's a very quick read. Great book. Very happy!!! Perfect, thank you! Very complete and with many many exemples of grid arrangements. Load more international reviews. I became aware of how important grids are when I was at art college and came across the first issue of a new grid system 2004 kimberly elam pdf free download magazine, 'New Graphic Design' in Published in Switzerland in English, German and French and containing dozens of pictures, without a strict grid all the issues of this stunning publication would look a mess.

The grid, put simply is a framework which allows several elements photos, graphics, text, display type etc to be placed in a rectangle and all work towards one aim, clarity of presentation. Virtually all publications use a grid in its simplest form it could be called the type area check out the page number position in a magazine, always in the same place defined by the grid. Having used grids for years I'm surprised that there is so much confusion but that was before I read through Kimberley Elam's book.

The straightforward becomes the obscure despite the good intentions. The most useful parts are the pages that use a see-through overlay, revealing the essence of the grid and nicely some disasters, too. What could be simpler than the two examples shown on page thirty-eight and nine, grid system 2004 kimberly elam pdf free download, Christof Gassner's redesign of one page of a theater program, from the dull and confusing to something so elegant and simple.

What is really interesting about the page is that it is all done with type only. Page forty-five uses another overlay for the contents spread of a book designed by Drenttel Doyle Partners in the see-through reveals a simple grid but the actual spread is a complete mess with type everywhere, even the three words 'Table of contents' is letterspaced in two typefaces, roman and sans.

The two examples of the grid I've mentioned perhaps sum up the problems that a reader of this book might have, most of the European grid examples shown use the grid to simplify the placing of all the elements on a page, especially the typography.

The American examples show basic grid versions that are virtually ignored when it comes to placing the page elements. This becomes evident in the last pages of the book where thirty-four design thumbnails are shown, one would not know they conform to any grid at all as each example shows a mixture of display type, text setting and graphics in no coherent order, in fact grid system 2004 kimberly elam pdf free download very opposite of what a grid is supposed to do with these same elements.

Perhaps the key element in any publication grid is the size of the text and headline types, grid system 2004 kimberly elam pdf free download, because these especially the text size remain the same on every page and other elements, photos and graphics, need to be positioned within the grid defined by the typography.

I think 'Grid Systems' is pretty hopeless in explaining the virtues of this essential design format and strangely there is a real dearth of titles about the subject, perhaps it's just a bit too narrow or technical for most graphic art publishers.

Translate review to English. Even though the quality of this book's information is top notch, grid system 2004 kimberly elam pdf free download, the constant need for zooming in and out from this version makes the experience lack somewhat. Great book for designers trying to figure out the basics of grinding.

Ottimo libro dal approccio didattico, tratta griglie, tutte molto simili con dei casi studio. Interessante l'uso di carta traslucida per esplicitare le composizioni di alcune grafiche. Julie Demar. Tu lo sai? No, e neanche il libro. Vinyls started peeling off.
